What could be done to solve the "Big 3" U.S. auto crisis?(Big 3 = Ford, GM, and Chrysler)?
I don't like the fact of giving these companies billions of dollars to stay afloat, are there any alternatives?

I don't like the idea of giving the "big 3" money either. I believe that they failed when it came time to analyzing their costs over a long term basis. You could possibly merge the companies which would hopefully reduce costs. Other than that, they need to find a way to make their products more attractive to the consumers. They need to start steering away from larger vehicles and head towards more fuel efficient cars/trucks. The United States could give rewards, like they have been talking about, for new advancements in technology. At least they would be working for the money instead of getting it for free. These companies have a lot of resources and I am sure that at least 2 of them will make it through this crisis.

I know that this is an unpopular thing to mention (at least in my area) but they NEED to find a way to get rid of the unions, or at least severely limit their stranglehold.

Anybody familiar with the way the UAW operates inside plants knows what I mean. It is sickening. I was called in to do some consulting work by someone at Ford (white collar), but I got to the plant and was stopped by a union guy who told me he wouldn't let me in.
I called my contact (the one who set up the job) and told him about it. He responded "yeah, I thought that might happen. Dang. Oh well, lets try it another time then."

What kind of a business is that???? A higher up guy cannot decide for himself who comes in to do consulting? The decision is left up to Joe Line worker who may or may not be in a "bouncer" type mood?

The alternative is that they quit giving millions of dollars in bonuses to their executives.

Let Ford fail....GM builds our military vehicles...i.e. hummer, M1-A Tanks also every train engine....Chrysler builds Cummings diesels that are in our semi-trucks.

GM had planned on a merger with Chrysler to begin with....let Ford die and we will have 1 car manufacturer to bail out.

Ford=Found On Road Dead....Fix Or Repair Daily....Failed On Race Day....F***ed up Old Rebuilt Dodge....and backwards.....Driver Returning On Foot.

the CEO's can take a pay cut - give up the bonuses and actually be fired and re-hire new CEO's, the Unions can agree to lower the wages, they are paid between $70 and $79 an hour;

Let them go under just like any company goes under when it is run badly.....someone else will come in and buy it......

It is a shame these companies have allowed themselves to be so crappy

Harrison S
let them go out of bussines then another companie will buy there name and buildings and start a new companie with out unions

Bankruptcy, it will allow the automakers to renegotiate new labor contracts based on reality and not insane wishes by the UAW. Plus they can restructure suppliers and hold off debtors until the market improves.

DUDE, THERE'S NO ROOM FOR THE "big 3"! MERGE THEM TOGETHER!

TOGETHER, yes we will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... NOT "yes we can" like those politicians!

Stop overpaying executives who push for production on low quality, poorly designed vehicles. Instead, give that money to the factory workers and employees who will spend that money to buy cars.

I enjoyed the comments from the representative of South Carolina yesterday regarding the use of private jet service over commercial airlines of the reps from the big 3 to get to the hearing.

The only corners that these "suits" are cutting are those of the blue collar active and retired employees. Why don't they ask the oil companies to bail them out? They over produced gas guzzling, giant eyesores, because a few idiot American consumers will buy anything to keep up with the Jones'.

Just because a thing can be done does not mean that it SHOULD be. Top management of these organizations has been dated for decades and should be restructured from the top down.

Get back to the "old school" values of good customer service, the customer is always right, lower pricing, longer contracts so your car note isn't as large as a house note. In the state I live in we have several dealerships that constantly practice over pricing which has some auto owners upside down in their contract before they drive the vehicle off the lot.

Let them fail and restructure, sell some of their private jets and other amenities to settle outstanding debt. Start all over as the good companies they before the onset of corporate greed!

Interesting comment from Mike C. I guess you are another azz clown that doesn't realize Toyota's and Honda's are made in the USA by American workers. If the Big 3 was so great they wouldn't be begging the government for a handout. A handout we as taxpayers must foot the bill on. I'm tired of paying for other idiots mistakes. The economy is tough for everyone right now, why aren't Toyota and Honda joining the Big 3 for a handout? I say let them go under and start over. First step is kick out the parasite that is the UAW. My God how many hands are in that cookie jar. The UAW is no more than organized crime. If you pay people a fair wage and treat them right there is no need for a union. Unions create lazy over paid works -- see Big 3

They can stop pushing gas-guzzling, money-sucking SUV's on people and start reinvesting in their cars and hybrid technology.

Haven't you noticed all of these companies stopped caring about their cars. Compare the amount of cars they made 10-15 years ago to what they make now.

Mike C
Have Americans buy American cars, F**k the Japs we should have nuked the whole country and we wouldn't have this problem. Quoted from a guy who used to work for Toyotas Warranty adjustment department, where they sell extended warranties to all brands to cover them after the original warranty is done. He said that Toyota had just as many if not more claims than the others,Dodge was the worst brand, and Chevrolet was the best. He is not a digruntled ex employee either, he was just telling me what him and his coworkers found while working there. He said Toyota scammed so many people with their junk extended warranties, alot of fine print that people never read.
