What could you do an what would you decide to do?
Bribery
You are a law officer investigating a case of bribery. During your investigation you find that a few years ago one of the suspects was very freindly with your son. Your son has recently set up his own business and it is developing well. You are told that if the suspect is put on trial, either by you or anyone else, then your son's business will be ruined and he will never be able to have his own business again.

The law officer needs to do his/her job. You will live with the guilt forever. You can tell your son what is going to happen as long as it won't effect the investigation.

Who told you this information? It was probably told to you to intimidate you and make you stop the investigation or to make a false decision.

You need to do the right thing and be ethical about this. If your son wasn't involved, you would not consider stopping/falsifying the investigation, would you? I know it is rough when you want to protect your children, but whether your son is innocent or involved in the matter (in which case he needs to be taught a lesson), you need to do the right thing as a law officer. If you can't do that, then I would resign my position immediately.

If your son's business is legal there's nothing to fear. If its illegal then ruining said business will straighten your life and open opportunities shall arrive. Do not fear. Do your duty because a person who uphold the law will be blessed richly. (Sollomon).

There are far too few facts here (understanably) to give solid advice.

However, assuming that "law officer" is "cop", then essentially it's largely out of that law officer's hands whether a case goes to trial.

In other words, the DA or ADA (or the grand jury, if applicable) is going to decide whether or not to prosecute the case, not the cop. That said, the cop should honestly report to the ADA whatever he/she uncovered in the course of an investigation. Beyond that, it's not his/her call. The person making the threats (which threats themselves may constitue some form of extortion or obstruction of justice), needs to understand that the police do not decide whether most cases go to trial or not. Pointless and unfair - even if it were legal - to threaten the person who doesn't control the outcome.

Simultaneously, the law officer needs to make sure that he/she knows all the dirt on his/her son. If there isn't anything to know, then it's all probably a typical panic-driven empty generic threat. Not exactly the first time that a potential defendant pulled the "I'm going to ruin you in this town!" schtick.

To paraphrase - "if the suspect is put on trial my son's business will be ruined - etc" - why is that did my son do something wrong or will he be ruined by association with the criminal. If my son did something wrong then he has to face up to that, if not then this seems like a huge exaggeration. I would dig into these allegations a bit more but on the face of them I think they are unwarranted and without further proof of this I would plunge ahead.

If the allegations did prove true and yet my son did nothing wrong I would have to refer the case to another investigator. I could not ignore something obviously illegal but nor could I be the one to hurt my own son so. So I'd refer the case to another investigator I trusted and hope for the best (supporting my son whatever the outcome).
