They are checking the time and date of your purchase. There have been shoplifters who walk out with bags filled with merchandise that they never paid for, giving the illusion that there purchases are legit. Its also suppose to deter people from trying to steal in that matter. |

Good question, and a lot of them probably can't read the small print... but i think they look at the date on the receipt to make sure ur not stealing stuff with an old receipt. |

I think sometimes they just want it to appear as though they're doing their job, when really they're just blankly staring at your receipt.
They don't do a very good job of "greeting" customers, either. |

To make sure the recipt matches up with your purchases. just in case you decided to pocket a few items |

Sometimes I think it's just to give someone something to do. |

I've only seen them actually stop people if they're leaving with large items, like a bike or a TV. It IS very funny though, at Sam's Club, where they DO stop you every time. You have a cartload of stuff, and the greeter glances over your receipt as if they can even BEGIN to inventory your whole order without digging through it. |

I have never had a "greeter" at WAL MART check a receipt. Now I have had a service person at SAM'S check the receipt upon leaving and the reason they draw the marker through the receipt is so that if you return something, they know you paid for it. (i.e. you could make a purchase on Monday. On Tuesday you could return to the store, pick up the same item off the rack and with the receipt, go to the return desk and get a refund for it). |

no they look at both
for instance.....
if your bag is large and your recept is small then you migh be shoplifting
and in some instances some ppl like wearing the stores clothes out so if they see you have an shirt in your hand then if its not on your recept then there u go.... |

Maybe how many items you have purchased. Plus, if stuff isn't in a bag, they make sure you actually bought it. |

I think they count the number of items in your cart and compare it to the number on the receipt. |

They mainly want to see if the cashier discharged or removed the security tags on expensive merchandise. If the cashier did not do this, the greeter writes them up with a demerit.
Stores like this in actuality have many security personnel walking the store posing as customers that come and watch you shoplifting, then they report this to the security camera people. |

Do you have something large that didn't fit in a bag? Usually when I buy something and it doesn't fit in a bag they want to check my receipt to make sure I bought it.
By the way, I hate Walmart but, sometimes I have to go there.
Stupid walmart.
More info:
I've never had them check my receipt just to check my receipt. They only check it if I have a large item that isn't bagged. |

you could always ask one. |

They quickly glance at the receipt for the date of purchase and what the items are. |

They are checking to make sure you actually paid for what you bought. They usually don't check small things, but let's say there is a TV on your cart, then they will make sure there is a TV on your receipt. |

I've noticed they seem to circle the number of items. I think they mainly just make sure nothing stands out as not paid for. At least I think that's what they are SUPPOSED to do. If your Walmart is like mine, you have the strangest people working those doors and I think they are just placing a mark on the receipt to look like they are doing their job. |

they do a rough scan like if they seee you bought lil sutff but have like 5 bags then they will double check your bags |

Nothing, they just get paid to smile as you walk in and out. They only check your receipt if the alarm goes off to make sure you aren't stealing. |

Your items,to make sure you didnt steal something. |

the people greetors at wal mart and sams club are kinda trained to glance as you are leaving the cashier....and just to watch to make sure you dont stuff something from your pocket in the bag and there is nothing out of the ordinary in size as compared to what is on your recepit |

Bit ticket items like electronics, jewelry, etc. in case the bell rings when you walk out. |

Let's say they check your receipt and your stealing something. You get past them, but the alarms go off. THEN they check your bag.
Legally, they cannot look in your bags.
Most people who are going to try to steal something... they have a certain look. They walk scared, and might be leanient about showing it. They're prolly looking for something like, if you have a TV or something in your basket... to make sure. They dont look over EVERY item on the reciept, but you can see the size of the reciept and estimate. |

The sensors at some Wamart's are calibrated to pick up the electromagnetic fields of some high-end electronics purchases, or at other times are keyed to frequently shoplifted items, such as CD's, batteries, etc. The greeter is looking at your receipt for these types of items. He/she assumes (quite naturally) that if the item shows on the receipt, it's in the cart. No need to look at the item itself. You probably went through a field similar to one at the airport and set something off. |

Kmart does this to..i don't understand the point of this either..they always check my receipt and not my bags ..and an alarm does not go off..everytime I go there they check.. |

They check to see that items that are not in bags are purchased for. |

I know! Isn't that annoying! It may be where we live. I get checked almost everytime though by this one worker. There is another who has never bothered me. Have you noticed too that they are all old. What are they going to do if I am stealing? Stop me..HA! I have never taken anything without paying and almost always spend over $100 when I go. I feel totally disrespected by them. What I bought is none of their business. I saw a suggestion to ask them. I might just do that next time. As a matter of a fact I may go there tomorrow. I need some shampoo anyway...LOL:)
GREAT QUESTION! I hope you get one of the non greeters to answer your question. The really are not very good greeters, but they are really good at offending me. One time I had to leave my buggy of stuff I had already bought to chase after my son who ran out the door. While she was plundering through my stuff. There was another time that I needed Tylenol because one of my kids had a fever. This woman was "checking" people's things so slowly she had a line backed up. I walked past it because I needed to get home to my sick child. She called out to me and embarrassed me horribly. So I called back to her as I kept walking "sorry but I do not have time for this bullsh!t". I can't stand those people. |
