What do CEO's do?
I would like to understand the key role of a CEO and if any of you out there could give an insight into a typical month I'd really appreciate it.

All the other answers really summarize well what a CEO is. . .so I'll spare you another summary.

Business philosophy today centers around a CEO spending 1/3 of his time on the top priorities of the company (there should be no more than 5 and all very high level say launching a new product, stemming losses in a particular division), 1/3 on HR issues particularly recruiting and mentoring the next generation of leadership, 1/3 on institutional or operational matters such as looking at performance, signing agreements, dealing with board, etc.

I think this is an ideal (espoused by many includng Jack Welch, etc.) that in reality is difficult to obtain. A micro-managing leader may end up spending 60% of his time on operations because he won't let VPs sign contracts for instance. A poor leader may not spend 30% of his time developing his staff for future leadership and recruiting the right talent to support him and the company. ETC.

What types of tasks does a typical CEO do? He has lots of meetings because he is many ways the face of the company and needs to maintain relationships with top partners, vendors, the board (his bosses), etc. He will look at numbers on spreadsheets to judge performance a minimum of 2-3 times a day as he is ultimately responsible to the board and shareholders for revenue generation and long term health (future revenue generation). He will review new proposals and give approval for package design, product marketing plans, etc. mostly done via PowerPoint in confernce rooms.

Don't know if that helps. . .but I gave it a shot

A good corporation would run just fine without a CEO. Their job, then, is to think strategically and "add value". They have almost no day-to-day responsibilities as such, being much more involved in the long-term future of the company.

It sounds like you are up for promotion. A CEO oversees all operations of the company and heads up the board of directors. There probably isn't a typical month example because all businesss are different in one respect or another. GOOD LUCK!

They're the head of a company, they oversee all operations.

Sweet FA as far as I can see.

Deep Thought
a ceo is the leader of a company (emphasis on leader - the concept of LEADERSHIP is the key issue in a ceo's activity)
the most important role of a ceo is making DECISIONS about the company
he oversees the financial, production, marketing etc. activities and decides the path that the company will take in the future

a ceo is the head of the company and reports only to the board of directors

all they do is get rich

They are the Chief EXECUTIVE Officer, which means they are ultimately responsible to the shareholders, they report to a board of directors who in turn, are there to ensure that the company is well run and that the shareholders interests are taken care of. IE: The shark generally is the CEO of the ocean, as we are the brightest and smartest of all marine life, plus more.....

A CEO spends an awful lot of time having lots of confidential lunches, chats, meetings and rounds of golf, all over the place, keeping the other industry fat cats happy so that they will carry on giving him their business

A Chief Executive Officer is usually the Boss of Bosses and is responsible for EVERYTHING! Ever heard the expression "The buck stops here!"? Well, it stops with the CEO!
