It depends on the company. Each company has a different slant on what drives the company. And sometimes the slant changes based upon the changes in the company or who is available. There are companies that are sales driven and the majority of the CEO came up through the company in sales. There are companies that are engineering drive and that is who runs the company. It is not the best person in a field that gets to be CEO. It is the best person for that job that should get it. Since there is so much pressure that required administration skills, often the CEO has abilities in that area as well through school or experience. Accounting is not a good person for CEO (I am an accountant) because they often do not see the whole company. MBA with a major in business usually helps show the company from broader perspectives.

well, you don't need a specific major to become CEO. You should ask what quality do you need to become a CEO. The following are some quality I think you need to become a CEO.
1. Good Personality, at least some interpersonal skills
2. A lot of experience in corporation management.
3. Enough Financial knowledge
4. Optimistic thinking
5. Fore sight in Business
6. Ability to think and analyze outside of the ordinary scope.
There are a lot of other secondary qualities you need. Wealth is definitely not one of the factor. Read some biography of some of the famous CEO in the world, and evaluate your own personality, and develop your own characters in business operation is the best way.
Harvard Business School is not absolutely necessary. Well, it is overrated. But it is good to have it on your resume. In reality, it doesn't help much.
Oh, "Apprentice" is just a show. Fast track to CEO is not real in real world. It takes patient to get to the top.

You need to have a vision and interpersonal skills (team building, ..). For large companies the CEO should focus on the strategic development, not that very much on the daily management.
To have a vision it's best to have a good degree relevant for the business, being familiar with accounting does help as well.
