What do stores like Walmart or Target do with returned goods?

fred_held
One of three things.
If they are not defective and still in the box they restock them.
If they are not defective and not in the box they send them back to the manufacturer (if they can). If not they donate them to charity or sell them to close out companies.
If they are defective, they go back to the manufacturer

TaxGurl
It depends on the item.
1. If it is still in new condition, it will be returned to the shelf.
2. If it is damaged or defective AND they have an agreement with the manufacturer, it will be returned to the manufacturer for credit.
3. If it is damaged or defective and the vendor/manufacturer will not take it back, the store will clearance it or destroy it. (At my last company, Sony refused to take back returned digital cameras. If we returned one, we had to find a way to sell it or take a full loss on it.)
4. If there is a health reason for the item to not be resold, it will be destroyed. (Like when people return worn panties to Victoria's Secret. I was shopping there once and mentioned that I didn't like one of their new products because it had fallen apart after just a couple of washings and wearings. The saleswoman said I could return it. Eeewww.)

I worked for a big box store and you wouldn't believe the amount of merchandise we were required to destroy and throw out. After the back to school rush, we were required to break entire cases of crayons, pencils, etc and dispose of them. The vendor would give us credit on the condition that the merchandise was destroyed. If we tried to donate it, we would be fired. It was horrible.

jamesb7476
they are sold to resellers that discount the merchandise and sel it in bulk. Very interesting actually. Try going to http://www.ninostrading.com and checking out some of the pallets of stuff.

charmel5496
retag them and put them back on the shelf and resell them

Brian
They eventually send them to a room in the back of the store, and then an employee will reshelf the particular item in the department it belongs to.

fratz f
they are returned to their distributors to be replaced
