An entrepreneur is one who puts up money (his own, his partners, etc.) to finance some project, which could be as risky as searching for a sunken Spanish galleon or to start up a new company (think about the beginning of McDonalds, Wal-Mart, etc.)
The rewards can be quite high; the risks can mean losing everything. Another example: Zerox. Not only did he raise all the money he could, he mortgaged his house, everything. Nowadays, a lot of these entrepreneurs will charge to the hilt on credit cards as well as taking out mortgages on their house, etc.
They are like high-stakes gamblers: they risk it all for a single thing.
So, in a nutshell, an entrepreneur is an investor in a project (searching for sunken Spanish galleons) or a business (usually a startup, but it can also be for expansion; i.e., the local business has been successful for 50 years, let's take it national). |
