What do you do when you find a work college completely objectionable, arrogant and difficult to work with?

Additional Details
A few details in answer to questions below: A few of us find this person difficult to work with. Ideally I'd like see the situation improve and for us all to be more successful.

First I pray the person gets hit by a train. When that doesnt work, I dream of tripping them when they are on their way up to a podium. But the chance never comes up.
So I have to do the hard work: I have to figure out exactly what behaviors the person has that are wrong to me. Best to just pick the biggest trait the person manifests and work with it. And it HAS to be a trait or behavior, not something that embodies the whole person. Something you feel confident that you can explain to them. And tell them 1) what the behavior is then 2) what the impact to your work is and 3) how it makes you feel.
Its best delivered in one sentence:
"When you do this, it makes my work late and I feel angry and frustrated. " Break up the parts and thats prime time for your offender to take over the conversation. Leave out any parts and you shot at influencing drops drastically. Speak of somebody elses issues, and you are gonna loose street cred with the jerk too. Because if you can point to specific examples, you'll make a clearer point.
I've had to do this a coupla times in my career, and have had to repeat the statement sometimes, but its always worked. And I usually tell a manager that I am having a situation and here's how I am handling it. I end up gaining points in the long run.
Its te hard road, definitely, but worth it when you can view somebody you hated as a person again.
Best of luck, I know how much that position sucks.

just ignore them, or ask them whats the problem

Keep your cool, they may be trying to get you in trouble.

Speak to your line manager or their line manager.

If that fails, put a kipper in their drawer!

Speak to your line manager and let them know you are finding this person difficult to work with and outline your reasons for this, your line manager should then deal with it in a confidential manner which will benefit all parties.
whatever you do don't ask other people what they think of this person and then slag them off as it will only look bad on you.

Is it just you that finds this person hard to get along with, if so it's time for talking? Ask this person out at lunch time and do some plain speaking, and ask what is his or her problem with you.

If others have the same problem then probably it is time for a word with your line manager. You make feel like a snake in the grass by doing this, but it is best to get the whole thing out in the open.

Of course you could humour this person by making them feel like they're the bees knees. It could be that this person is insecure and needs a friend to rely on.

My work colleague was my manager....... I left!!!!

I was so miserable I have never been happier as the last day I had to work with her... Life is too short to spend your working hours with people who are miserable and objectionable.

Pink
try everything to be his/her boss, or his/her boss's girfriend/boyfriend

dee
well i personally have a similar college she is the most arrogant person i have ever met in my life i cant bare to be in the same room as her so i just avoid her luckily my work place is big enough to do that if yours isnt i suggest you speak to him or her and tell them how you feel.

Starflower
You keep your dignity as much as possible.

Try to keep your integrity.

Try to stand up for yourself by mildly saying your peace as and when necessary!

Have you noticed how people who work with you seem to move on or don't speak to you. That will answer your question

I feel for you. It can be rough in the work place cuz we have to work w/ these people all day long so ya just gotta get along with them. I suggest that you don't go to management. It just makes you look bad. Send an anominous note maybe? or an an anominous note making it look like it is from someone one else or from a customer, to get the point across. This way you will be protected. I work with the Law & I gotta deal with someone who skips, hops & jumps down the halls singing "On The Good Ship Lollie Pop..." and other stupid kiddie songs. How unprofessional! Maybe it is time to look somewhere else? Remember, a change is always for the better! Goodluck & stay away from that person.

♥*´M`*♥
Just accept that they are who they are and you cant change them, they might be an arrogant useless c**t but if you just accept that you will never change them your day will be much easier and you will pick up less resentment and anger towards that person.

My advice is to do YOUR job to the best of your ability and whenever this person annoys you just think 'ah, that poor person, they must be very unhappy to be that arrogant that they believe they know everything and are never willing to learn etc.'

Good luck x

In The Netherlands there's a saying: one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar...
And another good one: if you cant beat them, join them.
