deer | What do you think about companies disciminating based on an "ethnic sounding" name on the resume? |
Have you seen this in action or do you think it is prevalent among many corporations?
If you had an "ethnic sounding" name or if you have one, would you change it for career purposes? |

I worked for Bank of America for over 30 years, and we did not eliminate anyone's resume based on their name. We only eliminated the ones that definitely were not qualified or had spelling and grammar errors on them. We would have passed over a ton of talented people if we had only looked at their name! |

It is illegal for any employer to discriminate for a variety of reasons - race, creed and nationality is top of the list. Any company that is found to have used discriminatory hiring practices is liable for millions of dollars in fines to the Federal Government, as well as many more millions of dollars in damages to those they discriminated against.
Most corporations with HR and legal departments understand this, and are extremely careful to have hiring procedures that do not discriminate - they only care about if you can do the job.
Such discrimination does occassionaly happen, but it is generally not prevalent in corporate america. This is largely due to the widely known fact that many legal firms obtain employee lists of major corporations, with an eye of launching a class action suit, for instance, if it does not hire enough african-american, hispanics, or whatever racial category they can find. In fact, in Corporate America it is more likely to have cases of reverse discrimination - that some people will be hired because there are not enough members of their race on the corporate book to show the company's "commitment to diversity".
Where there are more problems with discriomination is in small businesses, many of which have no in house HR or Legal department, and are not as concerned with following the rule of law. |

I've never skipped over an applicant because of their name. I would miss out on very good candidates if I did something like that. You just can't tell anything from a person's name.
I knew many international students when I was in college that chose to change their names. Either that, or they'd use their middle name as their first name. That was usually because it was an easier name for english-speaking people to pronounce. They didn't want to hear people slaughter their birth name over and over again. |

why would anyone want to change their name??? be proud of who you are...there aren't as many discriminating people in our world today as there used to be...however, if you act like you are being discriminated against, you certainly will be... |
