What do you think about cruise companies donating wasted food?
So much food is wasted on cruises every year..
Maybe cruise companies can start donating wasted food at ports?
Additional Details
What's wrong with giving it for human consumption..?

big daddy
Good idea. But, not for human consumption, right? It will be good for feed for animals. But still it has to be processed, and cleaned. because everything animals eat that we later eat, is very important. How much food is wasted on the ships, verses the food wasted at restaurants in your neighborhood? It will be a lot less costly to process wasted food next to the actual destination.

The CDC and FDA have federal laws that prohibit anyone from giving partially consumed food to the public. It is for the public health and safety. virus, and bacteria can be transferred and cause greater harm than good.

The food must be unused and packed to standards. The sea, is federal jurisdiction, so it is federal laws all the way. And it is extremely unlikely, because the USA does not want to transfer or receive any foreign diseases via ships that travel the world.

just imagine this, one sandwich or apples has the ebola virus from a cruise guest from Africa. he gets sick and dies on the cruise ship. The apple of sandwich he has touched has the deadly virus. The man gets taken off the ship in new york. Then the ship travel to Mexico, and gives the food to Mexico to feed the poor. A Mexican women eats the ebola tainted food and spreads the virus in Mexico, then the same thing happens in Europe, and so on until a world wide effort is underway to track the virus's origin and quarantine the disease.

get the point?

good idea - the only thing is that someone could get sick and sue.

then again if they people accepting the food promise not to claim then...

the same with hospitals, schools, uni's etc ...they could feed homeless folk with all the waste

I think it's a wonderful idea - most of that stuff does go to waste but from what I understand they try to keep it to a minimum level as possible. Maybe the cruise companies can set up agreements with Salvation Army. Most of the food is not even at it's expiration date yet, just that it wont' make it to the next port before being so.

Nothing. That would be a great idea, as tough as the times are now, and wouldn't it be some kind of tax deduction if you did? Great idea!

Alexis H
I agree with you.

It's a great idea if it's not already prepared food.

Although it is a good idea, there are several problems with implementation. First and foremost, is that the wasted food has been exposed to humans, either coming from their plates as not eaten or placed on the buffet counters and breathed upon. In both cases, there is the potential for the food to be contaminated with viruses and bacteria from people who may be carrying disease.

The second problem is the sanitary preservation of the food while at sea so that it would still be consumable when the ship returned to port.

Since, in many cases, the return port is in the USA, the stringent requirements of the Food and Drug Administration as well as Department of Agriculture would likely make this idea impossible.

jpwop1993
thats kind of disgusting i wouldn't do it

Samantha E
It is not as easy as that but there must be a way around the food laws to allow it to happen. I think we shouldn't support Industries that have as much impact as cruise liners. The fuel they use is huge & why do we all need to have so many holidays anyway.
