AlchikZ | What do you think about the Gas crisis in the US and it's long reaching ramifications? |
Gas in general and all the goods/services that use petroleum products (Plastics, rubber, transportation, delivery and pretty much you name it...). Additional Details Yep, Europeans have been paying higher prices for years but they were gradually led into versus what the US is experiencing now (A seemingly overnight doubling and more of prices for many things). Remember too, there are many many places in the US where public transportation is not an option and driving quite a number of miles to work is the norm. Many people now are just working to pay there way there if they are able to still afford to get to work. You can always say the US should have done this or that but they didn't and here it is. I think they could ramp up as in WWII and do just about anything they set their mind to. Be it drilling for oil on their land, building massive public transit systems or the most advanced fuel efficient cars in the world. The problem is political will and speaking in one voice. I don't see that happening unless it's a massive crisis. Even then, who know what their politicians will do.... |

What's the crisis? Europe's been paying $8/gallon, and double-USA food prices, for years and they're ok. Keep in mind that taxes take nearly half of their income in Europe, national sales tax (VAT) is upwards to 25%, so costs of living outstrip any perceived differences in wages.
The "long-reaching ramifications" are better budgeting, buying better quality longer-lasting goods, and reducing impulse purchases of crap junk that people really don't need anyway. |

Ehh... it is what it is. I'm paying 10 dollars extra every week to fill up. I don't really miss it.
However, I'm a delivery driver and I count my lucky stars every time I have to fill up with company truck with Diesel using THEIR fuel card! |

we're paying for it. The US uses the most gas in the world. We waste it on cruising around our neighborhood, racing,SUVs, you name it. Thats why europeans have those tiny cars and we have SUVs. I wish gas was back at $2 |

Long reach ramifications:
For the top 3% : None
For the average midde class family : less disposable income.
For the bottom 20%: the working poor will not have enough for the basics. |

I think it's a conspiracy. I bought a truck a year and a half ago, and it cost me about $40 to fill it up back then. Now the pump shuts off automatically at $75, and the truck isn't full. How did the price DOUBLE in less than 2 years? I remember this winter when the price was approaching $3/gal, the news was reporting that the gas prices were EXPECTED to reach $4 by the summer. It's now $4. I think it's a big conspiracy. They think that if they report outrageous prices in the news a few months before hand, we will be ok with it. If gas suddenly hits $4 out of nowhere, we are like WTF? But if the news tells us in 4 months gas will increase 25%, when it does we are like, "oh yeah, just like they said" and we accept it.
I am on the bubble of being able to afford to drive to work. Car pooling and public transportation are out of the question for me, because they aren't availible here. If gas keeps going up much more, I won't be able to afford gas to go to work. Therefore, I will have no job, and will not be able to afford anything. The rest of the country will be like this at some point. There will be a point when people will just stop buying gas, and either the country will go crazy, or they will just lower the gas prices.
Burning alcohol made from corn in our vehicles is NOT an acceptable soultion. It is bad for regular production gasoline engines, and results in premature engine failure. It also is futher screwing up our already screwed up economy. Beef costs more, because cows eat corn. Now there is less corn availible, because we are making crappy fuel out of it. Flour costs more, because farmers are growing less wheat and more corn to help keep up with Al Gore's corn demand. It is simply not an option.
Increase our domestic fossil fuel production. This may help slightly, but we don't have enough of it to support the demand. Not an option.
The possible soutions are:
1. Invent a different mode of transportation
2. Go to war and take over countries that have massive quantities of oil
3. Go to war and fight countries to lower their cost for fuel
4. Stop using fuel. Everyone will be jobless and homeless, and will just roam the country, living off the land |

they pay 8 dollars but they make more so it is about the same 1 dollar is not even close to a euro in value or a pound for that matter. The only way to solve the gas issue is to release the names and addresses of the opec people and their familys names and addresses... prices would drop to a reasonable rate and cut out the record profits crap... |
