What do you think it means for our economy when one of the largest drywall manufacturers lays off 65% workers?
They are going to lay off 65% of their workforce after the first of the year.
Additional Details
I'm worried like the rest of you. When a gypsum plant as big as this one lays off even half, let alone, two thirds of their workers that seems to me to be a pretty ominous sign.

Yes this is part of the effect of the housing market. No houses are being built or redone therefore theres no use for people related to the housing industry. Our economy as gone to $h!t and probably only going to get worse.

Lookout. I think you can make some assumptions about housing starts from this information.

Let's hope it is just a correction and not a long-term trend. I believe it is.

Well, new home starts are sluggish courtesy of the sub prime market meltdown, so it is not surprising at all..

This is a trickle down effect of the sub-prime mortgage mess. The primary victims are the home builders and the industries closely related to new home construction are the secondary casualties. Not much demand for drywall if new home sales are in the tank.

The verdict is not in as to whether this will lead to a recession - but many on Wall Street feel that it will lead to a downturn or a recession. The Federal Reserve bank is trying to do whatever it can to prevent a recession by decreasing interest rates and pumping money into the banking system.

It means housing starts are down dramatically.

It sure sounds ominous. I can remember a few years ago when there was a drywall shortage.
