In Chicago, they took over Marshall Field's, a name that has been cherished by Chicagoans for over 100 years. I for one will do my shopping elsewhere. I think they should have left the name alone. |

Like you, I was very disappointed to see the Fields name retired. It was an institution, but it seems todays that scale and national reach outweigh local preference.
If you think about it, though, this is the most recent in a series of consolidations ... and retail is only one of many industries seeing those consolidations. From your affinity to the Fields name, I assume you are from Illinois, where a number of local retail names, like Robesons, Myers Brothers, etc disappeared from the downstate landscape years ago ... replaced by the likes of Carsons and other regionals ... so not shocking that the regionals are now conglomerated into national brands.
Nevertheless, it is sad to see local nameplates disappear, regional diversity replaced by national 'vanilla', and hometown profits syphoned off into distant coffers.
So lets all hop into the Rambler and drive down to Goldblatts ... maybe they still take checks from First National Bank of Chicago |

Macy's has owned the other stores for years and are now trying to shore up falling sales by strengthening their main brand name. Think what you will of it, your beloved shop was already gone in all but name quite some time ago. |
