Surely the Footsie (FTSE, Financial Times Stock Exchange) is used to mean the FTSE-100, the index of the top 100 SE listed companies.

I mean if you meant the FTSE-250 you wouldn't call that the Footsie.

Freed Tigers Savage Elephants

Historically the acronism came from the events which occoured during the first week of trading on London's stock exchange. In 1733 the world's first stock exchange was started in a Bow Street Coffee shop. During the first day's trading the animals from Morgan Whittaker's Managerie and Zoological Empoium escaped and two Bengalese Tigers attacked and killed a pair of Indian Elephants on the streets of London.

The name has just stuck.

Hope this helps.
