Penney in the dry goods business was The Golden Rule, but was changed to J.C. Penney in 1913 when Penney accepted a majority ownership of the chain, William McManus still being a partner. We'd heard that it stood for Jesus Christ, but that seems highly unlikely since JC Penney became the name of the stores in 1913 (having been changed from "Golden Rule:) and James Cash Penney didn't accept Christ as his personal savior until after the stockmarket crash of 1929. Best we can figure, it stands for James Cash Penney.
