The project manager is responsible for getting work completed,
usually by a group, and getting it done within time limits, with
budgets being followed, and with a satisfying end results.

When problems arise, the project manager is held accountable
to speak on behalf of the team.

In a nutshell.

Projects are things like building a housing development or commercial builder. They are the team leader managing people and resources and handling problems.
With a home builder the PM gets assigned and works with getting permits for the project then doing the land development work hiring subcontractors to put in roads, sewer, drainage and utilities to the home sites. The sales people sell the homesites and work with customers on the plans and options. Once a home is sold the schedules are run and the project manager gets the plans and schedules. They are on site and deal with employees and subcontractors making changes when needed. They are very valuable because they keep things moving without wasted labor, time or materials. Thing depend on the schedule you don't want drywall people to show up if the electrical inspector didn't show up yet so he must make sure to change the schedule if needed. You don't want delays but sometimes they happen so everything needs moved back.

The Project Manager is responsible for making sure a project is completed within a certain set of restraints.

It really depends on what type of project manager. Construction? IT? Marketing? All of them do a lot of following up work. They serve as a liaison between their workers and someone else.

Edit . as long as you are a employee you should get some type of health insurance. If you are hired as a consultant or temp you won't

It really depends on where you work.
Sometimes it means glorified secretary others you will be making business line decisions.

The middle ground is keeping a team or group on task and in line with client expectations.

Client communications as a liaison and being the one person outside the team the sees and understands the bigger picture. You know the real objective of the project and allocate resources as needed.

Your project will have a SOW (statement of work). It will be your job to make sure every item as vague as it may be is fulfilled in the SOW on time and on budget. When it is not you will have to smooth it over with the client.

You will also need a good report with your team for those last minute not really quite on the SOW client happy to glad items.

Why else would they stay 2 hours late because you promised the client you would throw in an Excel export so they would agreed to 300K add-on work?

Add-on work is the PM's bread and butter. Good client relations fosters add-on work.

I have been a PM for IT/IS. The worse scenario is too little power with too much responsibility.

When your client feels something should be included in the SOW or misinterprets it you need to be the one to break it them. (Ask for more money)

In the end any client dissatisfaction will be on your shoulders.

Stand by your programmers - they will make or break you.
But don't let them push you around either. This is where not having enough power will become a problem.

It will be your job to maintain good client relationships and earn the clients trust.

You will conduct progress meetings and demos of the applications your team is building. Take client input and respond accordingly. (See is it on the original SOW or is the request an enhancement.)

You will be the team representative, secretary /coordinator, salesman and cheerleader.

And I state this last because it will be the most important thing.
It is your job to gather the requirements!
You listen to your clients and then relay what they need back to your development team.

If you do that wrong then the end result will be disastrous.

The project could be almost anything. Networks, customer service, construction, accounting, anything. They handle the logistics of the project. (they organize everything) What stuff goes where, what people are needed where, when something needs to completed by so something else can get started, etc. They keep the project moving forward in an orderly manner.
