I know that our local super markets he in Hawaii have a back up generator but as for our mini markets they shut the doors to the store and complete all transaction manually (cash only). |

Depending on the supermarket, the larger ones usually do have backups, because of the cost of lost product if they did not. In the case of a long term outage, they would discount the cost of frozen or refrigerated items so they can sell them rather then waste them if the generator quits working, and to conserve the amount of energy they are using to keep those items running. The back up is an insurance policy for the supermarket to protect their investments. |

I have a backup generator, or is that too extreme for my house which loses power just about every month? |

The place I shop has a back-up generator of some sort, but it does not power the whole store as if nothing happened.
It powers some lighting, enough so you can find your way around, and the cash registers and scanners, which operate more slowly and do less calculating, and I assume it powers freezer and refrigerator cases of perishable goods (meat, cheese, dairy) but not the beer cooler. |

Probably. It's not extreme..there are thousands of dollars worth of food in a supermarket. |

Some larger ones might, or the more.. errr... prestigious ones (if supermarkets can be prestigious? you know what I'm saying). There was a NoFrills near my house and their power went out in the summertime, so they just sold all their frozen foods & meat and stuff that was in the freezers or in cooling at a reduced price. It was like a massive sale. |

Yes, they usually do have a generator.
It's not extreme at all. There is hundreds of thousans of dollars in food between the produce, meat, dairy and frozen departments.
They also have insulating blankets ot put over the open cases. |

Actually, I think some supermarkets do and some supermarkets don't have a generator. When we had the big blackout a few years ago, most supermarkets here had to get rid of so much of their food. I assume that's because they either had no generator or one that didn't work long enough. |
