If you're talking of investments, an asset manager is tasked with looking after your funds which you've left in his good hands. He's supposed to grow your investments and maximise returns for you. He'll usually obtain your risk profile before deciding where to place your money. If you're extremely risk averse, he may place them with govt bonds and less on equities. He should be knowledgeable enough to know how best to invest your funds - place them all in US stocks? Diversify? Diversifying your portfolio to include both U.S. and non-U.S. stocks may reduce its overall risk, as measured by standard deviation. That is because a portfolio consisting of both non-U.S. and U.S. securities can help minimize the impact of economic downturns within
individual countries or regions. Of course, diversification does not assure against market loss.

It is important to remember that there are risks inherent in any investment including possible loss of principal amount invested. There are special risks associated with non-U.S. investments, such as currency fluctuations and changes in political and economic conditions. These risks, which are magnified in emerging or developing markets, could result in significant market fluctuations. Investments involving exposure to a currency other than that in which a mutual fund is denominated may cause values to fluctuate.

So it is important to find an asset manager who understands your needs and doesn't go wild with your money.

There are two words to look at "asset" meaning what you own. "manager" a person who manages thing (controls). Put them together in a sentence. And it's a person whom you have to take care of the things that you own. Hope that answers your question. It is like an housekeeper but a little bit different
