My co-worker died over the weekend and my boss doesn't really know what steps to take in this regard. We are a small corporation of 10 employees. My co-worker's entire family is out of state and not really well off monetarily. So what steps should we take? |

Whatever the employee manual says. If there isnt one, its up to the discression of the employer if he wants to give anything to the family...like any vacation of personal time this employee had saved up. |

I'm not sure what regularly happens, and legal steps. However, my father passed away this year. My sister and I are both at UC's that cost quite a lot of money. My father was very ill, but even stayed working from the hospital.. laptop and everything. As a gift to us, they gave us another months salary. |

Send flowers from the offfice and staff, expressing condolences from staff and management. The Office manager can call 1-800-flowers, or any similar type business and have flowers delivered to the family. |

You can take up a collection and send it to your co-worker's spouse along with a card signed by all of the staff. Even if it is a small collection (since your company is small), it is the thought that counts. You can also arrange to have a floral arrangement present at his/her funeral.
I am sure his/her family will appreciate any gesture of remembrance during this difficult time. |
