What does it mean when a company goes public?

Fawntel R
Going public means that the company will be traded on a stock exchange. Prior to going public, the company would be privately owned (which means it could be owned by another public or private company or by individuals). The company must be a C corporation before becoming publically traded (vs a pass through tax entity such as a partnership, S corporation, LLC etc. where the owners pay the tax liability instead of the company). After an initial public offering (IPO), the company would be traded on a stock exchange. After the company becomes publically traded, the value of the stock will change because it is more marketable (you can sell your shares today vs in a private company where it is harder to sell shares). Hope this helps!

A company takes itself public when it issue shares to be sold to the public via the stock market. A company is private when its shares are privately owned by individuals or other companies / investment funds, etc.

I would think that the company reached the revenue that's very high and they become powerful that they open their stocks to public to buy which means "public". This is just one of the answers.

I believe that means they sell their stock shares to the public. The stock may have been privately held prior to this.

usually means that they will be on the stock market for everyone to be able to buy. not just employees.
