What does it mean when a company suspends trading?
I work for woolworths, and on the news they have said that woolies suspended trading over night. Why would they do this?
Additional Details
Thanks Dixie. Really helpful.

Literally a company suspends trading when it can no longer supply to its customers. Like when its products are suddenly deemed illegal or they have orders for 100 but only have stock of 3 items with no chance of getting more. This is not quite the case with Woolworths.

It is not the company that has suspended trading it is the Stock Exchange no longer llowing the buying or selling of their shares. The Stock Exchange does this mainly because of rampant uncertainty, misinformation and rumours driving trading (in company shares). The shares are suspended until the management of the company can tell the market (stock exchange) what is actually happening. It usually only lasts a couple of days.

The have suspended the buying and selling of their shares , they have done this to prevent a hostile takeover of the company while they work on a deal to sell it

edit: suggest you read this news item :- http://www.housewareslive.net/news/news.asp?id=5306

by the way its not the stock market that suspeded the shares (like another answerer said) it was woolworths themselfs - wouldnt like to see you get the wrong information.

sicoll007
This happens when the share price of the company begins to fall too much. Lots of people, and pension schemes are in danger of losing everything if the shares continue to fall - so the Stock Market 'suspends trading' to prevent any further loses to those involved.

It means that temporally the company will stop trading. In this case as you said only over night. Woolworths is going to go into administration at some point this year which means that they will have to stop trading altogether.
