Can mean many things. It can mean that they have an excess of free cash. That might sound odd, but sometimes excess cash is a bad thing.

It can mean that they fear a takeover and want to prevent someone from acquiring too much of the company.

It can mean that the stock price is low and they want a way to pump it up.

It can mean that they, for a variety of reasons, are planning on giving the stock to their employees.

it means thy have extra cash (good) and they are trying to increase the value of their outstanding shares by taking some off the market - thereby reducing supply which will cause people looking to buy fewer available shares to bid higher prices to get them, increasing the value for all shareholders

Others have already posted good answers. In general, a publicly traded company buying back their stock means that they are regaining a greater percentage interest in the company. The previous poster gave you many reasons why a corporation would do such a thing. You should give him best answer.
