His Biggest Fear | What does my boss mean by this? |
I came into work and he called and said "just for future reference, to keep our relationship very professional, im your boss not your friend. So lets keep our relationship at that level".
Okay, that pissed me off!!! Ive only been working for him for like a week, ive seen him only twice and only talk to him regarding work. What could his problem be? Should i be offended? And i barely even know him to talk to him as a friend. Maybe i came off as friendly towards him? I dont know?!? Any suggestions or reasons why he might have said this |

I've said the same thing to female coworkers and for that exact reason. I don't want to be a jerk but sometimes it's easier than being too friendly and then finding yourself head over heels for a cute coworker. I see married guys all the time flirting with the hot girl, the hot girl reciprocates because she's nice and wants the boss to like her so she can get a raise and maybe she just doesn't realize that to her it's just being friendly but to him it's a lot more. Anyways, point to rambling, some guys don't want to put themselves into a bad position so they set up boundaries right off the bat. Nothing personal to you. In fact, i bet he likes you. |

You don't provide enough information:(department size, organization structure-who else reports to him?, company financial situation etc etc)
At the minimum, you might accept it as "establishing rules" so that there is no confusion. Perhaps he had a past experience that he doesn't want to risk repeating.
Good Luck!! |

Do you work with me?
Bosses are just assholes sometimes. Just because they have a successful company it doesn't mean they're not social retards.
Maybe he thinks your cute and is so afraid that he might sexually harass you that he's taking preemptive measures to protect himself by making totally irrelevant comments.
Maybe the company just hasn't completely sucked out your soul yet and he is just trying to help expedite the process. |

Yes, tempting ladies need to be kept further than arms length. Nothing personal, just making sure you don't get the wrong idea. Don't get offended by his comment. He's just trying to keep it real. |

Okay, first- calm down. If you're new, in some industries (or just some people) that's pretty standard. It wasn't a shot at you, personally.
Some people are particularly sensitive to feeling like they've hurt someone's feelings, even when the event/comment wasn't personal, so they tend to preface entire working relationships this way. I had a boss like that, and right now, working for a public accounting firm, I have 7 bosses- the partners- like that. You can be friendly with your boss, he just wants to make sure you know that if he has to tell you something unpleasant- say, about being late or poor performance- he's talking about the business, from the business's perspective, not a personal one. He may be afraid you're sensitive, too, which would compound his fear that you'll take business personally and get your feelings hurt.
It's convoluted, but it really bothers some people. Just know it's not you- it's him.
Hope that helps. :0) |
