"Pushing the envelope" is an aerospace term. It refers to the "envelope" of air that surrounds a plane in flight. To "push the envelope" means to go very fast, like the speed of sound or faster.
This term has entered the general language and has come to mean "being at the forefront", usually of technology or science. A company that is pushing the envelope is developing new products or ideas unlike other companies. An example would be the Apple iPod and iMovie. Both ideas that were ahead of all their competition and changed the way we do things.
A person can push the envelope by doing new and exciting things. The first people to bungee jump were pushing the envelope. Today individuals can be on the leading edge and push the envelope in many areas. Xtreme sports is one example. Another is developing new ideas at home. Don't forget that Apple Computer was thought up and started by two guys in their garage! And multi-balloon flying was accidentally invented by a guy who tied a bunch of helium balloons to a lawn chair. Now that is pushing the envelope!

It was an expression developed in the early stages of the Space Program. And it means taking things to limits that are yet to be tested. Or, going where no man has gone before.

It's actually an aviation term, aircraft have a performance chart with an "envelope" that determines the safe paremeters of flight (or at least reasonably stable). To 'push the envelope' means to go outside of this range or to fly outside of the envelope into rather dangerous speeds, altitudes, or turning radii.

Doing what ever it takes to accomplish the objective even if there's a chance I will not make it. As long as the objective is greater two lives for mine... that's an easyone. However don't get me wrong, I like living.
