Ryan | What does "market capitalisation" mean? |
If a company loses market capitalisation...what does that mean? |
|

Caz
|
Market capitalization is the market value of a company's stock, which gives a picture of the company's size. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the price of shares by the number of shares outstanding (in the hands of the public).
If a company looses it this means the majority of the stock belongs to the public (which is dangerous for a company and rarely happens) |

dear.....
i'll try to answer your questions.....
Market capitalization represents the public consensus on the value of a company. A corporation, including all of its assets, may be freely bought and sold through purchases and sales of stock, which will determine the price of the company's shares. Its market capitalization is this share price multiplied by the number of shares in issue, providing a total value for the company's shares and thus for the company as a whole.
Many companies have a dominant shareholder, typically a government or a family. Most stockmarket indices (DOW, S&P 500, BSE, FTSE, DAX, Nikkei, MSCI) adjust for these by working on a "free float" basis, ie the market cap is the value of the publicly tradable part of the company.
Note that market capitalization is a market estimate of a company's value, based on perceived future prospects, economic and monetary conditions, and therefore largely independent of a company's history. Stock prices can also be moved by speculation about changes in expectations about profits or about mergers and acquisitions.
It is possible for stock markets to get caught up in an economic bubble, like the steep rise in valuation of technology stocks until the crash in the year 2000. Speculation can affect any asset class, such as gold or real estate. In such events, it is normal for companies to become valued on past momentum extrapolated into the future plus justified by a convincing story as well as success, until it goes wrong and the world mean-reverts, causing significant losses. Conversely, stock markets will usually be the primary transmission mechanism for most of the pleasant surprises that occur in the world's economy.
Capitalized value is a synonymous phrase of market capitalization. |

it is a companies VALUE not size - it is only the price of the share multipled by the number of shares out there.. So Apple have 100,000,000 shares out on the market and they are 120$ each so it is capitalised at 12 Billion US$.... Size is a different thing.....if it loses capitalisation then it is because of one of two things
1. the share price drops
2. it cancels shares - sometimes shares started life at $1 each, they are written down and the share premium account can be raided then, sometimes shares bought in are cancelled so the number of shares are less (but the theory is the price goes up for less shares so capialitsation is constamnt....
99% of time it is no.1
why is it important? It depends on getting into DowJones or FTSE averages or indexes, if your firm is in an index the shares are "better" quality, rated higher, analysed more, traded more fluidly and rated more "blue chip" |
