I think you're talking about the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It's an average of the 30 largest companies in the stock market, that is used to gauge how the market in general is doing.

It's not DOW as an acronym but it's a real person's name of Dow.

Charles Henry Dow and Edward Jones were the founders.

Dow Chemical Company's ticker symbol is DOW.

Its stands for Charles Dow who created the first and longest running securities index. Its a price weighted index in contrast to the other indexes (S&P etc) but the reason it is important is because of the length of time it has been tracking the stock market.
