What drove Woolworth out of business?
Aiight. I remember going to Woolworth as a little kid a a coupla yrs. b4 it went out of business worldwide. Then I was 8 yrs. old (assuming it was 10 yrs. ago i don't remember exactly)and found that suddenly there's no Woolworth anymore. I only wanna kno wat exactly happened that it doesn't exist no more.

They could not compete with WalMart, KMart, Meir, etc. So they fell by the wayside.

regenetech123
Poor management. Walmart was not around when they folded.

Hi!
Being that i was a long-time Woolworth's customer in Atlanta..before that store closed..I have a few things to add.

They folded because of many reasons that have already been said. However...a few more things I would bring.

They did not change much...many of their offerings were very dated...and did not represent what many people needed or wanted. I also remember their pricing was way out of line..even far above..say..what a pharmacy store would charge you for groceries.

The collapse of any major corporation is always very complex; but Woolworth's closed mainly due to competition and rapid growth that they were not able to sustain. They reorganized after all US stores closed in 1997 and became Foot Locker, inc, which sells athletic supplies. The Woolworth's in the UK has been sepearate from the US version since 1982. Hope this helps!

At one time Woolworth was one of my mainstays, my father bought my first bicycle at our neighborhood Woolworths.

Merger after merger and dying retail sales brought the demise of Woolworths in the United States. Woolworths can still be found in the U.K.

Approx three years before it closed it's doors, the Woolworth company was purchased by and Arab purchaser who either didn't understand the American Market that Woolworth's covered or simply bought the company because it's assets far exceeded it's purchase price and therefore liquidated everything. As I remember towards the last days the items put up for sale were really the lowest quality remains from other liquidations.
