What effect do the online music stores have on the sales of retail music outlets such as vigin, HMV, bmg etc.?

Considering Tower just closed, it's a big effect. You've got instantaneous access, and on top of that, can buy the songs you want without songs you don't want.

I don't know if you've noticed, but there aren't actually any retail music stores left: they are now DVD shops which also stock CDs.

They have a substantial effect but in this day and age it doesn't really matter, they've just got got to keep up with the times,'cos technology is the boss these days

The simple answer is that even the really good record shops are suffering, for two reasons mostly- downloads of mp3 tracks and online CD sales.
Downloads are increasingly popular with people, and they are counted in chart positions as well. You can easily choose entire albums or even just one track, which you can't do in a shop. Downloads are cheaper too- average album downloads are around £7 for an album & 70p for a track. Compare this with £4 singles and £13 albums.
I prefer buying CDs over downloads for a number of reasons. Again it is going to be cheaper than any shops, it is 24 hour acess and it is possible to buy from just about any country in the world. Also, most CD shops only stock a narrow range of CDs, usually a small selection of chart and also 'classic' album back catalogues from well known bands. It is much easier for me in particular to find bands I like on the Net, especially as I like some obscure bands.
The effect is that the music stores are increasingly pushed to attract sales, and many now in reality rely on DVD and games sales alongside music sales. This means often that prices go up or the stores are forced to sell CDs for little more than costs. The online revolution has had, I believe, a positive effect in that music stores are now not just chart driven but stock everything from classical to world music, meaning more choice for customers.
It also means that the big music stores have been forced to evolve and change with the times, creating work and profits, and also ensuring one thing- that no matter how much the internet can provide, people will still want and can go to an actual shopfloor and talk with a real human being.

They help.
1.They get paid for every download
2 everybody gets paid for every downlosd.
They all have 'play counters' who keep the writers and players up in pocket) Not much motivation unless you get paid for what you
write or sing, or play instruments. THis means that if anybody pirates a tune to sell it cheap the real writers, singers and publishers earn nothing. Bang goes the finance for your fave groups next record."!!
