khmerbabee143 | What exactly do employers look for? |
I'm curious as to what employers are looking for on resumes, during interviews, background checks etc. I've been looking for a customer service job and have several years of experience but can't seem to find the right job. Is it because the job market isn't so great right now? I do notice that there aren't as many customer service jobs posted. What would be something that would be "eye catching" on a resume? I've had several years of customer service and sales, retail, call center, etc. I am also finishing up my degree in business management and will graduate in 2009. I am also a quick learner and have strong interpersonal skills. |

Clean and serious? How about qualified for the position, dependable, flexible, people person, honest, professional, able to work under pressure and with little or no supervision seems to fit the bill for most employers in customer service. For retail, sales experience, retail experience is helpful, customer service exp., people skills and able to work under pressure and must be flexible and dependable. |

I can tell you what I look for when interviewing and hiring for a customer service person. The first thing I look for is experience on the resume. It doesn’t necessarily have to be specifically customer service but I’d like the candidate to have some face to face contact with customers. It’s not the resume that typically catches my eye but the cover letter or the follow up. Resumes are pretty much the same. I am impressed when a candidate asks for a face to face interview or for a 2nd interview. I am impressed when they call to follow up on their application. It’s the person that seems to really want the job that gets my attention. After all I don’t want to hire people who really don’t care if they work for me or not. Don’t just put your resume online and wait. Call, follow up and try to get in front of someone to sell yourself.
Back to the resume. I get weary of people that have a lot of gaps in their employment. I mean consistent gaps. One resume I saw last week had a candidate with 5 jobs each with a 3-6 month unemployment gap. Also, never ask about vacation. This seems so obvious but if you’re looking for work you shouldn’t be asking when your first day off is going to be. You might be surprised at the number of people that ask how many days off they will get. We give them plenty but the interview is not the time to ask. Negotiation is the time for that. I also look for people with a long employment history. By this I mean they don’t work for 3 months and move on. You might only have had 2 jobs but if you stayed at each of them over 1 ½ years I’m fine with it.
And finally, be honest. Don’t try and BS me with a bunch of long words you don’t understand. Friendly, honest and consistency are important. Relax, be yourself and be confident. |
