What happened to AOL?
AOL used to be the number 1 ISP and they had a one time market cap of over $200 billion. How come AOL isnt what it used to be?

AOL was not an ISP when it started. AOL made Macs look good by putting a program on Apple machines that looked like a web browser and communicated with what was basically a bulletin board with buttons. AOL, at first, was a very small sub-section of the WWW stored on AOL servers. AOL was slow integrating the web to allow full access to the information out there. When AOL included a beta version of web access it was shockingly slow to retrieve pages.

That, and the constant flood of floppies and CDs in the people's mailbox. That was disgusting. It showed AOL had a lot of hype being driven by Steve Costs, founder and CEO of AOL. Consumer count was inflated by claiming millions of subscribers that were holding a "FREE 5 HOURS" CD, but haven't signed up for the service.

After the acquisition by Warner, the computer users were migrating to the web. That is, one could surf using a web browser and make any page their Home Page. Futhermore, with many ISP to choose from AOL was just overpriced, heavily censored and heavily policed.

AOL tried lots of things. They bought ICQ, a popular internet chat service. The synergy that was supposed to be AOL/print media/video and advertising just wasn't happening. The darling of the Moneybags investors got thrown off the top of the mountain.

They are now AWOL,they are victims of their own success,so many people had AOL that it was hard to get in the internet, and the ones that were in would be kicked out with no warning,so everyone started to change to different providers

More choices of faster DSL and Cable internet access from other providers, and sometimes they were cheaper.

Also, AOL didn't let you use your own email program, and they were blocking lots of emails that were not spam.

AOL was bought out by Timewarner Cable (RoadRunner). They
offer AOL features through RoadRunner.
