They didn't grow. People no longer needed "the internet with training wheels" which is what AOL still is to this day.
Ekamai
People became smarter about the internet. They realized that they did not need to pay for AOL since you could access the internet for free using mozilla firefox or internet explorer. My room mate who's in his 20's as well as my father both thought they had to pay comcast for internet and then pay aol just to sign on to the internet. They didn't know you could just pay the cable company and bypass aol fees by using mozilla firefox or internet explorer to surf the internet. People just grew as the internet grew and became smarter about how the internet works. I think most people thought they needed aol to get on the internet and it made things easier for us as we were learning but now we know we don't need them for anything. They have cool chat rooms, that's about it, but now we can just search google and find free chat rooms like icq and talkcity. They have nothing else to offer. As people got cable and high speed internet offered by comcast and companies like them have explained to those customers how to get on the internet using internet explorer, which has given people new insight that they didn't already have about how the internet works.

AOL was internet king back in the days of dial-up service. Now most people have broadband connections of one kind or another. Technology changed.

Technology changed, and they were too stuborn to change with it, thought everyone would stay at 56k lol. But in reality they invested a lot in that infrastructre, so they weren't lazy just risk averse. They would have been smart to invest in broadband and grow with it.

The technology that people used to get on the internet changed and AOL was too slow to change it so people got tired of waiting for AOL to change(and also to connect) so they quit using AOL and now almost nobody uses AOL anymore.
