What happened to Home and Colonial stores?
In the early 1900's in the UK there was a store called Home and Colonial. What happened to them? were they taken over by another company, if so who?
Also, what happened to International stores?
The tea merchant Julius Drewe (1866-1931) founded the Home and Colonial store chain in London in 1883 and retired in 1899. By the 20th century there were over 100 branches nationwide and Drewe was a millionaire.
What's unfortunate is that there's very little documentation about Julius Drewe, and what seems to have survived as his legacy is Castle Drogo.
This article may help you understand H&C's demise:

As will this one:

It is possible that the stores merged with another company.

I visited Castle Drogo in Devon, the home of Julius Drewe, founder of H&C a couple of months ago, and from memory I think H&C became part of Lyons/ABC. If you have time and are able to visit the Castle, I highly recommend it. There's a chart in the wall explaining what happened to the company after he sold it.

I think they became part of Debenhams or House of Fraser -but I could be totally wrong!
International became Gateway, which morphed into Somerfield, which seems to be disappearing rapidly

I used to go to the H&C with my mum in the 1950's. They had sawdust on the floor as I remember it.
Mr Chops
