What happens to sales people if they miss their targets?
In most companies, there are two components to the sales incentive. There's the financial incentive, where an employee may not get paid (or may get comparatively less pay) if quotas are not met. There's usually also penalties for missing quota, from a "penalty period" of review where comp is held back all the way to dismissal. Compensation plans vary by company, so it's always a good idea to read your company's plan carefully.

The obvious is that they also miss their bonuses.
But what if the problem did not derive from them; let's say it derived from production. Then there will be a lot of finger pointing, and ultimate resignation of upper level managers. In most cases sales persons keep their jobs!

It will depend from company to company.
In some companies if a sales person misses targets for 3 months in a row then they are sacked.
Others just miss out on bonuses.
