What if some virus wiped out banking computer systems and no one knew how much money they had?

Banking systems have many levels of backups, so one virus probably isn't going to do it. And not all banking systems are connected. Bank of America and all of its backups might go down but Wachovia would be fine, for example.

Lets assume though that everything was destroyed, just for fun. Money would become worthless and we'd have to go to a barter system until the economy re-stabilized (or a new one was created). So people who overspend and put things on credit cards would make out pretty well, since all of their debts would be wiped out and they would have a lot of stuff to trade. There would probably be a lot of chaos and theft, especially of food, too. And since nobody would be paid anything useful to transport goods, food would have to be grown locally. The National Guard might come in but who knows. It would suck.

You'd be, as the carpenter said to the bookshelf, screwed.

Your question assumes that a virus wiped out ALL data. Unlikely, but that is what your question asked.

So forget all the responses you'll get about computer backups and they like. Many people really can't read so who knows what responses you'll get?

Wouldn't happen. First of all because banking systems are heavily secure, second of all because all banking data is backed up several times in different systems. So even if a virus did get through and wiped it, there would be a backup of all the information. All companies, even some people, have backups of their data in case this happens.

That's why I keep all paper statements and daily web statements.

i download and save all my online statements as a precaution and back up my computer to dvd on a regular basis. also all banks have secure backup systems. it's not just banks. the entire financial industry including stock exchanges exist on electronic ledger entry basis only. here's another scary thought: a freak electric storm from the sun like a solar flare or a coronal mass ejection could wipe out all electromagnetic data on earth.
