What if there was a Wal-Mart built in your small town community?
There was a Wal-Mart built in our small community (approx. 4000 people). I can only think of two stores that shut down. The two stores happened to both be hardware stores and they shut down BEFORE the Wal-Mart was open. The community still has a hardware store (there were 3), 2 pharmacies, a photographer, a quilting shop, a grocery store and many other unique small town stores. Most people believe that small town life and businesses are destroyed by Wal-Mart coming into a community. But, it was the locally owned grocery store that razed an entire city block of Main Street to build their parking lot when they expanded their store. The grocery store put about 8 locally owned, small businesses out of business as only one relocated. I don't think the community suffered from the Wal-Mart. In fact, I think it has benefitted from it in the form of jobs, taxes the Wal-Mart pays and additional shoppers from other surrounding communities. I don't know if this answered your question or not, but I hope it helps.

On the one hand it would benefit the consumers in that town by making items more available at a lower cost. on the other hand it will severely hurt the small businesses that cannot compete with such a large company with huge overhead.

The ma+pa shop would close, but there would be more jobs and growth for the community.
