What if you owe money to a company you no longer work for?
I found out today(from my friend) that several employees, including myself owe money back to our employer. Payroll messed up and now they are looking for payback. I do not work for this company anymore. Do I still have to pay it back? No one from the organization has contacted me about this. They sent it out via the work e-mail, but I don't have access to it anymore.
Additional Details
I think it's for about $800. I did keep my pay stubs and now that I'm looking at them, I see where they paid me for time that I wasn't there, but then I see where they said I was not there and I was. Plus they were supposed to adjust my salary April 1, they didn't until mid-April.

I guess that it is a moral issue. You agree that there is an amount of money that you owe the former company. You have two choices. Since they can not just deduct it from your paycheck like I would suppose that they are doing with other people, you can make them sue you for the error. The other choice is figure the correct amount that you feel that they owe you and either pay them back directly or wait until they contact you and then pay them back after you both agree as to what they owe.
Your decision and not mine.

So you are saying they paid you money you did not earn? Just call them, find out what you owe and pay up when you can.

Why would you wait? Just to get out of paying money you already know you didn't earn? Don't listen to the deadbeats and thieves that would recommend you hiding from your debt. Just call, pay, then laugh at the deadbeats, always scrounging for nickels and dimes, and willing to keep that which is not theirs.

It depends. Wait for the mail to reach you about the mistake, and what it is and how much there is to pay back. It could be that they have already written you off, and won't try to get it back.

Don't sweat it until you get written notice.

Don't worry about it until the company contacts you about it. Then ask them for proof that they paid you in error. If they can show it, it is then up to you whether you want to pay or if you will fight them on it. Legally, you would owe them the money, but they may not press the issue if it is a small amount since you are no longer an employee.

wait for them to actually try and sue you

A company I worked for did the same thing to me. I never paid and it's been like 5 years and I haven't ever heard from them again. And they've never shown up on my credit report. So unless it's thousands of dollars don't worry about it.

avoid it until you get an official letter in the mail. maybe you will get lucky and they won't bother. good luck to you.
