What is Microsoft's major weakness or how can they be beaten by their competitors?

The main weakness is creativity. In order to beat the competitors, Microsoft does the similar things but with a better quality or buy the companies if affordable. For example, the first windows os version is 3.1 if I'm not wrong, the idea of using Mouse instead of typing text like in DOS is actually from Apple computer. With programming, .Net framework does similar things like Java had before, but .Net is easier for developers. Samething happened to SQL Server Database. Many features of SQL Server Database was newly built followed the things done in Oracle. Now one of the main considerations of Microsoft is Internet market I think, which was dominated by Google or some other companies like Yahoo. In the history, Microsoft bought Hotmail, it's a good strategy but not enough. However, because Internet Explorer browser goes with Microsoft Windows OS, it's one of Microsoft advantages for the next moves.

Microsoft major weakness is the not having a big presence in the internet. Google is actually catching up quickly with Microsoft dominance within the computer realm.

That is why Microsoft is trying to merge with Yahoo, to have a bigger presence in the search engine or internet.

Like the last person said, it's their software. Look at Apple, the software is so much better. the only reason most people still buy microsoft products is because in like computers, there a lot cheaper. and those windows updates are terrible.
microsoft isn't very good with repairing broken machines either. trying to get the warranty out of them was a pain.

Microsoft weakness is there selling every thing (product)

Microsoft's major weakness is that they practically fund their entire operation by selling their Windows OS and that is not a bad thing, but it is something that will become a growing concern over time. Now, it is not going anywhere anytime soon, but Google, already dominating the search and internet ads market, is making leaps and bounds in the cloud computing arena and even made their own browser (Google Chrome).

What is really going to hurt Microsoft is when the Microsoft-dominated OS market gets turned upside-down by Linux, Mac and Google. Although Google does not have an OS yet, you can be sure they are developing ways to curb the Microsoft hegemony and creating an OS that taps into the Internet for ALL applications will be the way of the future. When that day comes to fruition Microsoft will have to re-think like David instead of acting like Goliath.

That day is not now, but soon and with the technology sector growing as fast as it is making obsolete yesterday's products, Windows will not be exempt from this inevitability. You can be sure that many in the industry have their sights set on Microsoft's demise, and when that day comes those who will be left standing will be the ones that thought like the young Microsoft. This is a classic case of history repeating itself.

Coincidentally, just who is going to be that new David that slays the giant is up to Microsoft... just like they did to IBM will be the same be done to them.

Microsoft's software is not as advanced as the other leading software companies. Oracle for example is known to be much more advanced. It's just that these 'advances' are not needed by the common computer. And Oracle is amazingly expensive when compared to Microsoft. Oracle software is used by government and medium to large companies, I believe...

Remember that the reason Microsoft and Bill Gates are so successful is the marketing techniques Gates used as well as the fact that Gates showed up for an important meeting with IBM to create compatible software. His competition(who supposedly had a superior software platflorm) didn't show up to this meeting. His persistance and marketing created a software enterprise.

So I don't know if I answered your question the way you wanted it answered but...Oracle(the number 2 software company in the world) creates a much more advanced software platform...If this becomes needed by the public Microsoft would probably be beat. So their weakness is their inferiority and simplicity.

Microsoft's major weakness...I think it's probably their code. Their OS's aren't very stable and the majority of viruses out there are written specifically for Windows because it's so vulnerable. Since Microsoft is so widely used and depended upon, the best way to bring them down would be to knock them off their pedestal with a better OS like Linux, which is FAR more stable and secure. Mac's OS is probably too proprietary to ever take Microsoft's place.

Like Sean said above though, Bill Gates is on top because he was smart, not because he was the best. His products are VERY user friendly when aimed at people who just aren't very computer savvy.

Until someone comes out with a simpler and more widely accepted game plan, Microsoft will be on top in the computing world.
