Nike was started in the United States of America by University of Oregan track runner Phil Knight and track coach Bill Bowerman in 1964 under the original name Blue Ribbon Sports. During 1964 and 1965 the duo were travelling salesman, selling their running shoes at track meets across the United States of America.
Then on April 26, 1966, fellow runner and school-acquaintance Jeff Johnson opened the company's first retail outlet in Santa Moinca, California (at 3107 Pico Blvd. to be precise).
As far as the legal origin of the company goes, Blue Ribbon Sports was officially incorporated in the state of Oregon on December 26, 1967.
The contemporary NIKE name did not come into use until 1971 when Jeff Johnson coined the term, inspired by the Greek goddess of victory--NIKE.
Thus Blue Ribbon Sports and NIKE started in and have always continued to be based in the United States of America. Their international headquarters are still based in unincorporated Washington County, Oregon near Beaverton, a suburb of Portland.
