What is a FLOATER job in a MAnufacturing company? Is it a good position?
I just would like to know if it's a good position to work in or not? Do floater get more money?

A floater is a person who fills in on jobs where needed. It's a good job if you don't have a lot of experience and you want to learn everything about a particular field. You move around to different places day to day. But the drawback is you never get comfortable enough to learn something really well. From my experience the pay is not as good because usually the job is filled by an inexperienced or newer worker who comes in at a lower pay rate. You get to find out what you like and dislike about different jobs in the plant and also find out what you're good at.

It means you will go to whatever job assignment is open. One day you may be asked to use a machine to meet a special order, and the next day you may be asked to work on an assembly line to fill in for someone who is sick. On the positive side, you will learn different jobs and if a particular job opens up you might be able to get a permanent assignment. As an employee who has "floated" in different positions, you might be more valuable if they do cut-backs since after floating you'll have experience in different tasks.

On the negative side, floaters are extra employees and can be the first to be laid off. They usually don't get more money. A big question for you is whether the manufacturing company is unionized or not. If so, the union contract will describe how floaters are to be used and how job openings are filled at this location..

A Floater fills in for people who are sick or on vacation. It's usually an unskilled position and it fills in for other unskilled people.

It's not a good career position.

Sometimes floaters get more money depends on the company. Most of the time though you only get more $ if it is for a shift differential. It mostly means you are going to where they need you...if someone doesn't come to work or is sick, fired. It can be a good thing since you get to learn every aspect of their process. It can lead to other things in time....supervisor positions etc, if you are good at learning new things and safety.
