A franchise is an agreement enabling a third party to sell or provide products or services owned by a manufacturer or supplier. A franchise is granted by the manufacturer, or franchisor, to a franchisee, who then retails the product. The franchise is regulated by a franchise contract, or franchise agreement, that specifies the terms and conditions of the franchise. These may include an obligation for the franchisor to provide national advertising or training for sales staff in return for the meeting of agreed sales targets by the franchisee. The franchisee normally retains a percentage of sales income. In other cases, a franchise may involve the licensing of a franchisee to manufacture a product to the franchisor's specification, and the sale of this product to retailers. Franchises can also be organized by issue of a master franchise.

Starting a business by yourself is taking a big risk. Buying a franchise reduces the risk. In fact, successful franchisees are typically risk averse. They want to minimize their risk as much as possible and so they choose a strong franchise system with a proven track record.

If you love to take big, bold risks, franchising probably isn’t for you. If you are careful and thorough in your franchise research so you know just what you are signing up for, then you have the stuff to triumph as a franchisee.

So, how many of these qualities do you have? Unlike a magazine survey on health concerns, you can’t get some of the answers wrong and still be in good shape. You need all of the above attributes to consider yourself a great candidate for franchise ownership.

This new business you are considering is your business and the money you invest is your money. You’ll want to have every advantage possible to make it successful. So before you begin research on a franchise company, do some soul searching about your own assets and how they fit with a franchise opportunity.

There’s nothing more exciting than embarking on that road to owing your own business. Just make sure you can avoid the speed bumps along the way.

It's a person who owns one of more locations of a franchised business. For example, the owner of one or more McDonald's locations, or one or more Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Parlours. Businesses like these are known as franchises, where the parent company actually owns the "brand" you are selling. For details on how franchises work, there is tons of information online.

If one chooses to franchise McDonald's, and open one or more McDonald's locations, instead of opening their own restaurant, say "Joe's Hamburger Shack," he or she is a franchisee, or franchise owner.

Someone who owns a franchise. Whether it is something like WalMart, McDonalds, or a sports team.

It's somebody who has created a business and 'RENTS' shares of it out to other individuals.

In other words, they leech off your hard work.
