what are some types of monopolies

mukwonago53149
One company gets control of a certain industry or product. Once that company has control, they then will jack up prices through the roof because there is no competition to keep them in check.

The key idea to remember about monopolies is that the company is trying to increase profits by raising prices and keeping competition out of the market.

alcaholicrage
A situation in which a single company owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service. This would happen in the case that there is a barrier to entry into the industry that allows the single company to operate without competition (for example, vast economies of scale, barriers to entry, or governmental regulation). In such an industry structure, the producer will often produce a volume that is less than the amount which would maximize social welfare.

Microsoft is often accused of being a monopoly

starburst80
When a certain business controls the market share of their product, they have a monoploy over that specific product. In other words, they have no real competition.

the game or politic things

brandontremain
An example of a monopoly is like how Microsoft Windows operating system is the most used operating system in the world. Microsoft basically had a software monopoly because everyone basically HAD to buy it just to run their computer and microsoft controlled the prices. Thats how
bill gates became a billionaire because he had a software monopoly.

zach
a complete rule over a certain industry.
example: it seems like Walgreens is taking over the drug store world. For them to have a monopoly, they would have to virtually get rid of all of its competitors.

Why do you want to get everything in the game of Monopoly?
To take over everything

YouGotTold
A monopoly is when a business has an exclusive market on a certain product, which doesn't allow other businesses to compete with them.

I LOVE MONPOLY!!! YEAH

David
A single company, or companies with common ownership, controls all sales of a particular product or service in a specific market. This environment typically leads to higher prices and lower levels of service.
