jayeeta_jd | What is a reasonable notice period prior to leaving a company. Is one bound to give reasons as in a new job? |

2 weeks is the general business notice period for resigning from your position.
WHY?
You want to leave on good terms and to have a good emplolyment verification reference from your last employer helps.
All you have to say:
In writing, Prepare a letter stating that you have decided "To Pursue Other Career Opportunities" at this time and leave it simple and Thank them for employing you.
You can get samples of resignation letters at:

First of all kindly go through your letter of appointment in which the notice period is clearly mentioned. So no question of reasonable period. If you leave prior to the period you have to pay one month,s salary where no period will apply. Anyhow generally it is one month;s period for leaving the job and some reason has to be given. Generally it is stated due to unavoidable circumstances it is not possible to continue further hence I may kindly be relieved is sufficient. |

two weeks is common, but if you have a really good relationship there, you can give more notice just as a courtesy. you're not obligated to tell them why, but if you're comfortable giving that information then go ahead. |

Two weeks is the standard courtesy period of time for leaving a job; this date should be two weeks after you hand in your resignation letter. Be sure to sign a copy of the letter to give to your employer and keep one signed and dated for yourself. If you have any major reasons for leaving the company address them briefly and in very professional terms in the note to let them know your reason for leaving. eg. They scheduled you all the time you said you couldn't work certain days you could word it as "Scheduling confusions or difficulties." If it comes as a surprise to them that you are leaving they will probably have a discussion with you about your resignation anyways, and you can also tell them reasons then as well, don't be scared to address any issues, just always remain professional. |

The quitting etiquite is 2 weeks. However, if you have been at a company for a long time and are able to give more notice, the more the better. This will give your company time to find a replacement.
However, if you cannot give 2 weeks, there is nothing legally saying you have to give your 2 weeks. It is just polite.
You are not required by law to give a reason. That is a choice.
Hope this helps. |

Two weeks is expected. A reason is not necessary. Though, a professional position will likely request an Exit Interview to obtain reasons. You aren't obliged to accept. |
