A recession is when a country fails to make more money then it is spending. If it does that for 3 consecutive quarters then that technically a recession.

How it affects you:
Well if not enough money is being made then people stop spending and as a result companies make less profit so start to make people jobless. As people become jobless they spend even less and the country makes less money through taxes and companies less profit so they make more people jobless.
So you could find that you have no job and can't afford things

a recession is defined as a period of two quarters with negative growth. it affects you in the sense that companies will recieve less profit and therefore put their prices up. housing prices become less affordable and interest is less. ie - people cant afford things that they could afford before the recession.

btw - we are not yet in a recession.

Stagnant or negative economic growth within a limited period of time, typically a few months.

Such an event may cause inflation, job destruction, and a variety of other effects.

Curious Me
The old joke - recession is when the other guy loses his job...and depression is when you lose your job.
Recession is a down-turn in the economy, marked by a number of markers, such as job employment, consumer index, interest rates, etc.

Even if you are financially secure, and your loved ones are, too, you could feel the effects of recession. Some examples could be
"tight money" through stricter bank policies,
increases in fuel oil for home heating, airplanes, diesel fuel for truckers who deliver supplies to market).
Higher prices for food at groceries and at restaurants
No funds for community improvement projects, school funding for after-school activities, no raises for teacher's salaries.
No raises and bonuses for workers.
Increased interest payback for credit card loans, and national trade debt.
The effects are all-encompassing. And this is just a recession. And on and on
It's time to "tighten our belts".

I had answered this question at least five times before. Anyway it will effect you if you are working in the financial and housing sectors. We are not in a recession yet but even if that happen do not panic and live your normal life.

I graduated in May'2008, and its September I am still jobless. People who graduated in 2007 with similar caliber got jobs easily and I am finding difficulty. I am getting interview calls but competition is very stiff since positions are less and candidates are more. I am a recent graduate, can't talk much about grocery bills, income tax and other house hold stuff, to me most important thing is my career and getting a good job.

it is a period of hardships which include the following economic hardships- high inflation, resources shortages, drought, war , political instability so to an individual you will experience high costs of goods and services there by being affected negatively

It's something about money, and the distribution of money and some sort of debt that isnt being paid...

A recession is 2 or more consecutive quarters of 0% or less growth in the economy. It affects everyone because prices rise, particularly food in this case, but not limited to that. Jobs are harder to come by because people are spending less and companies are making less money, sometimes causing people to lose their jobs, which begins the cycle all over again. At a basic level this recession is mainly fuelled by people borrowing more than they are able to pay back and they're suffering now because of it.

They always told me, that A recession is when your neighbor looses his job. And a depression is when you loose your job. The effect, is you will be watching the economy more and more to see if you will loose your job. And chances are in your line of work, whatever it is , will be trying to cut costs every chance they can. Especially in labor. And probably most prices at the grocery store will be on the rise also.
