An Actuary assesses risk for insurance companies. That enables the insurance companies to set a premium. The actuary will tell the insurance comapany, for example, out of every hundred people who insure against a particular thing, how many times that thing will happen and therefore how many times the insurance company will have to settle a claim, and how much on average each claim will be.

With that info they then know how much to charge for the premiums.

Before computers an actuary had to use pen and paper to do his calculations. In today's computerised world he will use his computer.

Please remember kids, although computers have been here since you were born, they did not exist just before you were born. So people had to think and work a whole lot more

My friend is a Actuary for BC / BS, and her job is to determine risk, risk assessment, how to control exposure to a risk.

Its a lot of math, and calculations.

Actuary's calculate risk, as has previously been said. They usually work for insurance companies or betting companies. That's how insurance quotes are made, an actuary's job is to balance the risk with the cost of repairing the damage made if the risk doesn't pay off.

An actuary is an expert in statistics especially one who calculates insurance risks and premiums.

they calculate the value of pensions, etc., so they have to take into account risks involved and come up with the estimate; it is rather sit down job

Becky H
Do you mean an 'actuary'? They are primarily mathmeticians working for insurance companies and such like, they take data, facts and figures, and turn them into life expectancies. They are sat at computers and desks for a lot of the time.
