My cable company, my Electric company, my subway/train system (MTA), the local phone company & water utility.. the 2-headed nonsense that's both Dem & GOP political parties (if you're aware of Ballot rules)... then, here in NYC there's the "Authorties" like the Port Authoriity of NY/NJ, well that MTA I mentioned, the Bride Authorities (Verrazano tolls are now, what? $9?)... it's amazing how the people of NYC just down storm buildings and drag the appointed, fat-cats out by

there are no monopolies any longer. A monopoly is when there is no competition. The closest thing we have to a monopoly is the power company. The telephone companies have competition now, you have another choice but AT&T. smaller phone companies, cell phones, etc. The Cable companies have competition. Sattelite, rabbit ears and even phone companies are getting into television broadcasting. The only thing you don't have a choice about is where you get your power.
To the one who said Wal Mart used to be a monopoly, that's why K Mart was started....I hate to tell you, K-Mart was around before Wal Mart was. Be sure to at least somewhat know what you are talking about before you try and answer questions. |

Cable companies (ie cox) because usually they are the only cable provider in that region so if you don't want sattelite, you have to chose them. |

At one time newspapers and broadcasting stations (especially radio) had virtual monopolies within each town. The internet is quickly putting and end to both. Newspapers across the country (including some the oldest and largest) are going bankrupt as we watch in real time. This is a huge opportunity for the smart man or woman who has plan to take advantage of this inefficiency in the marketplace.
Few true monopolies exist today other than utility companies. Google, Walmart, & Microsoft are still hopeful however. |
