With the simplest words that is the basic of the business. When you work with products for example and you have to take them to the stock market you have to find an idea of its look, or packing , or delivering or fetching the subject in an better way then of your oponent's one. Your product is supposed to be better then the opponent's one with your idea.

This is a management of practice of gearing up and working towards a definite, clearly defined and quantifiiable goal.
These goals are usally set up after surveying various organisations in the same or similar industry/segment as yours and selecting the best of the industry as the "Norm". This norm becomes the "benchmark" For example if Diamler Mercedes has a customer satisfaction rating of 99.995% which is the highest in the industry, this can be adoped as a benchmark by others who will try and achieve the same result by constant efforts and re-designing their business processes geared towards the goal.
For Finance professionals it may be the inventory, cost of capital, return on capital employed, profit per-person employed, etc. are various parameters which can be used as benchmarks. |

Benchmarking may be a one-off event, but is often treated as a continuous process in which organizations continually seek to challenge their practices.
