I suppose it could be anywhere, but I have only heard it used in the USA. It is supposedly the day where retailers, who operate for the majority of the year in the red (operating at a loss), start earning a profit; hence, they term the day black Friday.
It is really just a saying now. Retailers could make a profit earlier, later, or not at all. |

Yes only in the US. It's the Friday after thanksgiving and also the busiest shopping day of the year. It's called black Friday because most retail businesses finally move out of the red or negative ink and into the black actually turning a profit for the year. |

In retail it's considered the day to get out of the red ink and into the black ink. For those of us who have to cut our Thanksgiving Day short, not make any plans and get up at 1:30am to be at work, we refer to it as HELL! |
