What is corporate social responsibility?

CSR is all about companies playing a positive role in the communities they operate in. It can range from minimising the impact the company has on the environment right through to contributing to local charities and initiatives to help make the community a better place.

For example my company gives its staff a week off every year to do voluntary work which the company co-ordinates including everything from clearing waste ground, refurbishing community centres, spending time helping out in local schools with reading and writing practice, acting as mentors to young offenders - there's something to suit everyone.

Whilst I'm not naive enough to think that companies have an active CSR agenda for altruistic reasons, I think CSR is a win-win-win situation. The local community benefits, employees get the double feel good factor of volunteering and knowing they work for a responsible employer, and of course, the company's image is improved.

A bunch of lies coupled with bullshit, made up by low paid employees with studies in law and psychology and promoted by well paid executives who do not believe a word of what they’re promoting

it is the social responsibility that a company has towards the public. e.g. creating an ethical stance, to show to the public that they are environmentally friendly. They need to be accepted by the public to have any hope of being successful, it is their social responsibility. Like they could sponsor a school, or local charity, maybe even national if they are a large enough company. It is about keeping good relations with their stakeholders (people interested in their company)

Corporations provide personnel for dealing with social issues within their community. It could range from taking responsibility for a section of highway to keep clean to fund raising. I am more familiar with the fund raising aspect. I have worked with a number of corporations on fund raising projects on such issues as ADA (American Diabetes Association), American Cancer Association, American Heart Association and a local Children's hospital. These corporate sponsors provide personnel and funds for these and other issues. The premise is that a corporation should give back to a community where it has been given so much. Many charitable organizations would not exist without corporate involvement.
