Deamt account is one where the equity shares are held in dematerialized form. Previously we used to have physical share certificates which are now converted into demat form.

De-Mat account to de-materialise physical shares. Need only if your are in shares. If you have shares in old mode, you have to make them de-mat for sale etc.

Several banks offer a De-Mat account which helps to de-materialise physical shares. It helps in buying and selling shares online.
