Ethics is a complex thinking pattern. Its not as simple as right or wrong and it most definitely is not Morals. Morals and Ethics intersect but are not the same. Ethics talk about the universal aspect of right and wrong...it also asks why something is right and wrong. Things that may be wrong at one time may be right at another time.
Example: Its bad to lie...we've been taught this as children. However, if you're hiding Jews during the Holocaust and the Gestapo came to your home and asked if you were hiding Jews...would you say yes or no?
On one hand you're saving your lives and the lives of other people, on the other hand you're lying to officials of the government and breaking a law.
I would highly recommend the book "Writings on an Ethical Life" by Peter Singer. He delves into ethics pretty deeply and covers it in ways that anyone can understand. |

Though law often embodies ethical principals, law and ethics are far from co-extensive. Many acts that would be widely condemned as unethical are not prohibited by law -- lying or betraying the confidence of a friend, for example. And the contrary is true as well. In much that the law does it is not simply codifying ethical norms. it is basically dealing with affairs in a way that you should. |
